10th Edition of Senapati Dist level football tourney begins

The 10th Edition of Senapati District Level Football Tournament 2015 organised by Tumuyon Khullen Youth Club (TKYC) at Brig RS Sirohi Ground, Tumuyon Khullen is underway.
The event was inaugurated by Minister of IFCD, Printing and Stationary Ngamthang Haokip as the Chief Guest.
Formerly called Brig Sirohi Trophy, the tournament started in 1985.It was sponsored by the Indian Army for the youth clubs in neighbouring villages till the 8th edition.
The 9th edition was turned into a district level tournament last year after a gap of 5 years.
At present, the tournament is organised by Tumuyon Khullen Youth Club with help from Assam Rifles; NYK, Senapati and the DYSO, Senapati.
They provide sports materials like balls, nets, materials for making tents beside the ground for players, etc.
President of TKYC James Kelly said that the tournament was aimed at bringing peace, love and mutual understanding among neighbouring villages and communities.
Since the trophy has turned into a district level tournament, the president appealed the participating players to put in their best effort and build better understanding with different communities of the region.
Speaking as the Chief Guest, Minister Ngamthang Haokip called on the players to be excellent so that people could admire them.
He said sports can bring in money and also can help youth in securing job privileges apart from bringing laurels to the District.
He stressed on the importance of sports and appreciated the organisers for bringing better understanding with people living in the region.
The minister also said that he would initiate a plan to set up a standard size ground within the Mayangkhang area where the youth could organise games involving different communities.
On the occasion, the minister also distributed red blankets to the headmen/chief of the Mayangkhang region.
18 teams including one from Thoubal district are participating in the tournament till November 7.The first round will be a league game for 3 rounds followed by knock out from quarter finals onwards.
The organisers said that teams from Mao up to Kalapahar used to come and participate at the tournament whenever the games were conducted.
