Imphal, February 20 2020:
National Bamboo Mission (NBM), Manipur State Mission Director DD Haokip has said that plantation of commercially viable bamboo species will be carried out in the State under National Bamboo Mission.
He was speaking as the chief guest in a training programme on Bamboo Processing Machine Operation and Maintenance which was held at Common Facility Centre (CFC), Sawombung, Imphal East today.
The training programme was jointly organized by NBM, Manipur State and Cane & Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC), Burnihat, Assam under the funding from North Eastern Council (NEC), Shillong.
Haokip, who is also the State's Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, further said that many of the bamboo species grown in the State are not so commercially viable.
He then stressed on the need for greater exploration work regarding bamboo potential in the State.
There cannot be much improvement in the economic upliftment in rural areas of the State unless the potential of bamboo in interior regions are explored and properly exploited, he added.
Claiming that improper road connectivity in the State has often caused hindrances in the exploration and exploitation of bamboo, Haokip went on to exude that completion of railway lines in State will be a boon in setting up large bamboo industries in the State.
The NBM State Mission Director also underscored the significance of bamboo in economic upliftment saying that it forms an important commodity in the day to day life as well as in the economic development of the people, particularly the rural populace.
He also noted that bamboo forms an important constituent of forest in the State and it also immensely contributes in containing climate change.
Divisional Forest Officer/Central Forest Division, Government of Manipur RK Amarjit Singh and CBTC, Burnihat Manager (Training) H Priyokumar Singh also attended the function as president and guest of honour respectively.
