Imphal, August 29 2026: Khundrakpam AC MLA Th Lokeshore has claimed that the State Government exists merely in name, with its functioning controlled by the Centre.

He made the statement during a get-together of executive members of Imphal East District Congress Committee (DCC) held at Kshetrigao Community Hall.

Lokeshore, who is in charge of the MPCC Election Committee, said the BJP and Congress are fundamentally different and alleged that the BJP does not uphold the federal structure and often interferes in the functioning of State Governments.

The State Government led by Chief Minister Y Khemchand is unable to function independently in the interest of Manipur due to interference from the Centre, he alleged .

In contrast, he claimed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi views India as a Union of States, where the States should be able to carry out 90 per cent of their functions without interference from the Centre.

Saying that many people had left the party at crucial moments, he appealed to all party members not to work for personal interests but to uphold the interests of the party.

The Congress leader further said that former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi did not always follow the instructions of the party leadership, whenever they were against the interests of Manipur.

He went on to state that the MPCC had made Congress leader P Chidambaram retract his statement that was against the interests of Manipur in 2024 .

The State Government, however, always waits for instructions from the Centre, he claimed.

Further alleging that the BJP has jeopardised the State, Lokeshore appealed to the people to teach the saffron party a befitting lesson in the forthcoming Assembly election.

Lokeshore went on to claim that the BJP is a communal party that works solely in the interests of Hindus.

He also urged intending candidates of the Congress party for the forthcoming Assembly election to understand and uphold the party's principles and ideology.

Those who have recently joined the grand old party must understand why they chose to join the Congress and acquaint themselves with its principles and ideology, Lokeshore added.

The programme was also attended by MPCC vice president Amin Shah, Imphal East DCC president Sheikh Abdul Kalam and other party leaders.
