Kwakta rally reinforces demand for NRC

Bishnupur, August 29 2026: Massive numbers of people in Kwakta today took out a rally demanding the Government to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) prior to Census 2027.The rally, in support the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD), was jointly organised by the Jamait Ulama Bishnupur, Anjuman Ishlah-E Muashra Kwakta, All Meitei Panghal Youth Association (AMPYA), All Kwakta Coordinating Committee and All Kwakta Youth Voluntary Organisation (AKYVO).

Womenfolk and youths mainly from Kwakta Municipal and Gram Panchayat areas took part in the rally.

Representatives of NRC Demand Committee Moirang Sub-division also participated in the rally.

The rally began from the Public Ground at Kwakta Bazar and reached several places in Kwakta before concluding at ground.

The protesters denounced the Government's attempt to carry out census operations, and reiterated JFD's call to boycott all census related exercises.

The protesters held placards and raised slogans demanding the Government to update the National Register of Citizens before census 2027.Anjuman Ishlah-E Muashra Kwakta vice president Moulana Shahidur Qasmi said that the rally was organised to demonstrate people's opposition to the Government's attempt to carry out census exercises before the NRC.

The Government must hear the public plea and update the NRC before census operations, he said.

Detecting and identifying illegal immigrants before census is crucial, and as such, the exercise must be conducted after the NRC is updated, he added.

The people of Kwakta support the JFD in its campaign for NRC, he said.

The protesters also asserted that updating the NRC is a must to safeguard and protect the State's integrity.

Meanwhile, at a press meet held at Moirang Kumam Mandap today, NRC Demand Committee (NRCDC) Moirang Sub-division's spokesperson, Y Shyam Khuman, reiterated JFD's call on the public and urged people in the subdivision to refrain from organising festivities until the Government takes steps to update the NRC before census.

Shyam informed the public that the committee has approached Moirang AC MLA, Oinam AC MLA and Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam and they have agreed to all the points presented to them regarding the NRC.

The committee will further approach remaining MLAs in the district and ascertain their standing on the issue, he added.

NRC Demand Committee Moirang Sub-division convenor Moirangthem Leima and co convenor Salam Maniton Devi were present in the press meet.
