Andro pottery gaining popularity

Giant earthen water pots of Andro which can store up to 50-60 litres of water are gaining popularity among the visitors of the village.
Most of the visitors who come to this village purchase these giant pots.
28-year-old Phanjoubam Dinachandra is also one of many potters of the village who make these giant pots.
Apart from these popular pots, he also makes various other items like piggy banks and flower vases having different designs.
The young potter said that he learnt the art from his mother.
He used to make different of types pots during holidays as a child, Dinachandra said.
After he passed Class X examination from Catholic School, Canchipur, he started taking up the occupation of pottery to supplement his family's income, Dinachandra recalled.
He said that pots are generally made by mixing mud and fine powder of dry earth.
If any particles like gravels, stones and metallic pieces are present in the said mixture, the pot would explode at the time of baking, he said and added that full completion of pot takes three days.
Saying that most of the visitors of the village and Santhei park purchase different types of earthen items, Dinachandra said that he can earn Rs 15,000 to rs 20,000 per month from the occupation of pottery.
He wishes to continue the traditional pottery of Andro.
