Imphal, January 09 2016 :
Experts today said the smoke emitting from a
wide fissure created after the January 4 powerful earthquake in
Noney area of Tamenglong district and the uninterrupted flow of
water from the long crack will do no harm to the villagers now.
The smoke coming out from the major fissure "is water
vapour and there is no danger" in using the water, senior
research scientist at Delhi University, Geology Department, N
Pahari said.
The scientist and his team along with personnel
from the state Disaster Relief Force carried out a study on the
developing phenomenon of the fissure which has triggered a
panic among the villagers.
N Pahari said the water flowing from the cracked ground
was due to the landslides triggered by the tremor which rocked
the state killing eight people and injuring over 100 others.
It
had damaged over 200 houses and other structures.
He said the water might continue to run until two-three
weeks.
There is no danger if the villagers want to use the
water now, he added.
Kabui Khullen, about 27 km from Noney, was the epicenter
of the earthquake.
The village now has some 17 fissures
separating each other about 3 ft after the before dawn tremor.
According to the study, the fissures in Kabui Khullen are
occurring on stone grounds, which could be of a single line.
The cracks look like a table structure, it said.
N Pahari warned that the lower ground of the affected area
in the village could slide down at the strike of a mild earthquake
or heavy rain.
"The villagers should try to move to the
northern side from the southern area if such things happen,"
Pahari advised.
Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam inspected the
quake-hit areas of Tamenglong yesterday.
He distributed relief
items to the victims during the visit.
Gaikhangam had a look
on the major fissure which has caused a fear among the
villagers.
The Deputy CM also visited a relief camp at Noney Part-
I where nearly 400 quake victims are taking shelter.
He handed
to the victims Rs 3 lakh which included Rs 1 lakh donated by
private financial institution UNACO, Imphal.
During the trip Gaikhangam told the villagers not to shift
their settlement in fear saying the state government was taking
help from research scholars to determine the ground situation.
