Imphal, September 05, 2013:
As done throughout the country, Teachers' Day celebration in commemoration of the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr S Radhakrishnan, educationist and second President of India, was also held in different parts of the State along with paying tributes to teachers by their students today.
The main celebration function was organized jointly by the State SSA Society, State RMSA Society, Higher and Technical Education, SCERT, Adult Education, Directorate of Language Planning and Implementation, BSEM and CoHSEM at the jam-packed Multipurpose hall of DM College here.
Unable to hold the huge crowd comprising thousands of students and teachers inside the hall, extra chairs and benches were arranged outside.
The function was marked by distribution of awards for Best Teachers and schools producing good students.
In all 15 schools were awarded for producing good students and five teachers selected by the State Level Selection Committee were felicitated for their outstanding and extraordinary roles as teachers.
Surprisingly, among the 15 schools awarded for producing good students, except for TG Higher Secondary School, the rest of the Government schools could not make itself fit for the honour.
However, most interestingly, even though 14 out of 15 schools selected for award for producing good students are all private schools, in all five teachers selected for the State Award were all Government teachers.
The teachers who were selected by the State Level Selection Committee and awarded the State award included Moirangthem Khalen, Headmaster in-charge of Khangabok Cherapur Upper Primary School; Angomjambam Keilyani, Headmaster in-charge of Sagolband Popular Primary School; Ningthoujam Ambrapati, Arts Graduate teacher of Moirang High School; Khangembam Indrakumar, Headmaster in-charge of Kumbi Sanding Primary School and Pukhrambam Gulapchao, Headmaster in-charge of Nirpu Government Junior High School.
Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh stated that the present condition of Government schools in the State is indeed very unfortunate.
Although School Management Committees have been formed to look into proper utilization of the funds sanctioned under SSA for development of the schools, the development works finalized by the committees concerned have never been properly completed.
Expressing regret over the inability of some of Government schools to produce even a single student who could appear in Matric exam or make a single student passed in the exam, Ibobi stressed on the need to identify the problems and loopholes being experienced in these government schools for taking up necessary remedial measures at the earliest possible.
Since the Education department is one such department which cannot be developed when the required funds are in hand, the Chief Minister conveyed his willing to sacrifice the funds meant for some other departments and sanction over Rs 2000-3000 crores to the Education department, but stated that the way to develop the Education sector should be made known clearly to him.
Delivering the Presidential address, Education Minister M Okendro stated that since the enrollment of teachers under SSA was done in a fair manner, the number of parents showing interest in sending their children to government schools has increased.
The Minister informed that to overcome the problem of excess students coming for admission in Government schools, a common admission form for all government schools will be issued and make the students to choose not less than three schools of their choice.
The Manipur Education Service would also be initiated within a couple of months so as to bring about a change in the education system in the State, he added.
The function was also attended by MLA DK Korungthang; MLA Prithviraj, Parliamentary Secretary in-charge of YAS and Tourism; MLA Vungzagin Valte, Parliamentary Secretary in-charge of Horticulture; MLA Md Fajur Rahim; MLA Alexander Pao; H Deleep, Director of Education (S) as Guests of Honour.
