Imphal, September 05, 2013:
The 18-kilometre long road from Pallel to Chandel District Headquarters is in its worst condition with large potholes right in the middle of the road.
The road is akin to a "fish pond" causing serious disturbances to the commuters.
With its district headquarters located at about 63 kms to the southeast of Imphal, Chandel is home to various tribes including Anal, Maring, Moyon, Monsang, Chothe, Lamkang, Tarao, Thadou, Hmar, Vaiphei, Zou, Aimol and Tangkhul.
However, the 18-kilometre long stretch of the road from Pallel to Chandel district headquarters is posing serious problems to the people of Chandel during their travel to Imphal.
The Imphal-Pallel Road is a part of National Highway No.2 and it is somehow in good condition.
The trouble begins right from Pallel Bazar lying on the side of NH-2 up upto Chandel Dist HQs.
The large potholes along this road are usually filled with water during monsoon season, thus, taking the form of a "fish pond".
Two-wheelers find it difficult to ply on this road as the large potholes are all covered with water.
Commuters have to spend more than one hour while passing through this 18-kilometre long road.
The development of this road was handed over to BRO/BRTF in 2010 by State Public Works Department.
However, the BRTF has been dilly-dallying the works by just employing three/four labourers to mend the road over the past three years.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, General Secretary of Chandel Naga People's Organization (CNPO) BD Betha said that the condition of the road has got worsened after BRO/BRTF took over the works from State PWD.
The CNPO and other civil organizations have been protesting against the deplorable condition of the road.
The authorities concerned have also been informed about the road condition, but nothing has been implemented so far, he lamented.
The problem of this road was also raised in the State Legislative Assembly by MLA of Chandel Nunghlung Victor during the recent session.
However, the Works Minister had said that the State Government could not intervene into the works of BRO/BRTF, the General Secretary said.
Betha further drew the attention of the State Government to take up necessary measures to develop the deplorable road between Pallel and Chandel District Headquarters.
