Elucidating on the factor responsible for the violent confrontation in Moreh on August 18, Kuki Students' Organization (GHQ) has strongly decried the alleged biased reporting by some State's media houses, reports our correspondent.
Sasang Vaiphei, vice president KSO (GHQ) lamented that in view of unfair reporting witnessed in some local electronic news channels and local dailies about Moreh incident, KSO (GHQ) felt the need to make public aware of the nature of the incident and the factor responsible as to the confrontation broke out.
Meitei community in Moreh numbering about 400 households was trying to hold pro-ILPS rally at Moreh ever since the same demand started to gain momentum in Imphal.
He said that on knowing the plan, Hill Tribal Council (HTC) met the Meitei Council Moreh (MCM) and tried to dissuade them from carrying out the rally.
HTC considered the rally as ill-timed since Moreh had been reeling under impacts of recent landslides and flood and that such initiative could would further place Moreh in a more precarious situation.
He also said that HTC and MCM met thrice to discuss the matter and on August 17 they came into an agreement in which MCM agreed to call off the rally.
However, the District Magistrate, in sensing trouble brewing up in Moreh, issued an orders clamping CrPC 144 in Moreh with effect from August 18, added Sasang Vaiphei.
On August 18 at around 8 am, some miscreants belonging to Meitei community violating the agreement of HTC and MCM came out on the streets and forcibly shut down schools and business establishments even though the curfew was still in effect.
Moreh police commandos, in total contravention of CrPC 144, allowed the crowd to take out rally on the street.
When the Kuki community came out to protest, they were met with stiff resistance from the police commandos.
Four people were injured during the clash after which the situation became more intense.
Media houses never reported the injuries sustained by the Kuki community but gave repeated coverage of the woes of the Meitei community of Moreh, Sasang added.
KSO appealed to all the communities in the State to uphold the reconciliation peace meeting initiated by various civil society organizations on August 19 at Moreh Trade Center to maintain peace and normalcy at the border town of Moreh.
