Imphal, August 22 2015 :
Expressing strong disenchantment on the delayed formation of Councils in Tamenglong and Chandel ADCs even two months after declaration of election results, members of ADC, Ukhrul said they may be compelled to join the democratic agitation launched by Tamenglong ADC members if the two councils are not formed immediately.
In a statement, Dr Yaronsho Ngalung, chairman, ADC, Ukhrul said Ukhrul ADC members failed to understand as to why the two district councils could not be formed despite a coalition had staked claim to form the councils on many occasions whereas councils in Ukhrul, Churachandpur, Senapati and Sadar Hills were formed on July 31 .
It can be stated that local grassroots democracy has been severely scuttled due to non formation of councils in these two districts as the councils have not been allowed to function smoothly and on a normal course.
It needs to point out here that Democratic Alliance in Chandel and Tamenglong districts enjoy clear majority, and the delay in formation of councils in these two districts is nothing but deliberate Government's policy of smothering tribals' welfare and development.
Ukhrul ADC members expressed solidarity to the decision to launch democratic agitation by ADC Tamenglong to protest the delay in formation of the council.
All the concerned including civil society organisations, intellectuals and individuals should come forward to show support to the endeavour for strengthening local self Government, the Ukhrul ADC chairman said.
It also wondered why tribal MLAs have kept mum on this hill areas related issue.
It urged upon the Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Members of Hill Areas Committee not to allow delaying of formation of councils any further without valid constitutional and legal points.
The Ukhrul ADC members appealed to the Governor, the Chief Minister and the Minister of Tribal Affairs and Hills facilitate council formation of Chandel and Tamenglong without any further delay in public interest.
