Imphal, August 22 2015 :
Members of Autonomous District Council (ADC), Ukhrul expressed dismay with the delay in formation of Councils in Tamenglong and Chandel districts even after two months of election results.
In a press note, Chairman of ADC, Ukhrul District Dr Yaronsho Ngalung said, "We have failed to understand as to why the two district councils could not be constituted despite having staked claim to form the councils on many occasions whereas Councils in Ukhrul, Churachandpur, Senapati and Sadar Hills have been formed on July 31, 2015" .
He said that local grass-roots democracy has been "severely scuttled due to non formation of councils in these two districts" as the constituted councils have not been allowed to function smoothly and on a normal course.
Dr Yaronsho pointed out here that Democratic Alliance in Chandel and Tamenglong districts enjoy clear majority and the delayed formation of councils in these two districts is nothing but deliberate Government's policy of "smothering tribals' welfare and development" .
While expressing solidarity to the decision to launch democratic agitation by ADC Tamenglong against the delayed formation of councils, the ADC Ukhrul Chairman said all the communities including civil societies, organisations, intellectuals and individuals should come forward in support for strengthening local self government.
He also wondered why tribal Members of Legislative Assembly have kept mum on this hill areas related issue and urged the Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Members of Hill Areas Committee not to allow delaying of formation of councils any further.
He also warned that ADC Ukhrul may be compelled to join with the democratic agitation if the two councils are not formed immediately.
