Imphal, June 24 2015 :
With the State facing a drought like situation, the Manipur Loumi Lup has urged the authorities concerned to step up efforts and work in the larger interest of the farmers.
President of Manipur Loumi Lup, N Mangi informed the media in a press meet held today at Irawat Bhawan that the authorities concerned have failed to come out with measures to solve the problems arising due to inadequate rainfall.
He pointed out that various multipurpose projects in the State have ceased to work or have completely failed.
Such failure landed farmers of the State to serious trouble.
He added that all the farmers are dependent on the monsoon rain for cultivation and with limited rainfall this year, there is high possibility of people facing food scarcity.
In such a situation, the Agriculture Department and other concerned authorities should work together to bail out people from the danger which is lurking around the corner, he stated.
As 80 percent of the total population is dependent on agriculture and allied activities, the State Government should initiate Crop Insurance Scheme and the Government of India should provide all the necessary help to the State farmers.
Suggesting that the Agriculture Department renovates the distribution system of high yielding variety seeds by conducting field enquiry to determine which farmers deserve those kind of seeds, he demanded that all the machinery required for cultivation and crop production be provided to all farmers by authorities concerned.
He further warned that if the State Government fails to redress the grievances at the earliest, Manipur Loumi Lup will initiate democratic form of agitation against the Government.
