Imphal, January 16 2014 :
Under the theme, 'Save fuel, save money and save environment', Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight observance has started at Nirmala Hotel from today.
The observance, which will continue till January 31, is being organised by Petroleum and Conservation Research Association under the aegis of Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Oil Industry.
Around 70 students took part in the students' open painting competition organised as part of the observance.
Speaking at the function as chief guest, CAF and PD Commissioner Y Thamkishore said that India is compelled to import fuel and gas from other countries as the total production is not sufficient for consumption in the country.
As such, it is high time to consume less fuel in order to conserve it more for future use, he observed.
Saying that unlike past, heavy traffic jams are witnessed on Kanglapat road and Sanjenthong during office hours everyday, Thamkishore stressed on the need to opt for public transport services to reach office, schools and colleges instead of travelling in private vehicles.
Thamkishore opined that people must not take driving private vehicle as a status symbol for the sake of conserving fuel.
In his keynote address, IOC Assistant Manager (Retail Sales) T Dharamvir said that India's actual crude oil production in 2012-13 was about 37.86 MMT, which is about 0.6 per cent lower than the previous year's production of 38.09 MMT.
The marginal decrease in crude oil production was mainly due to lower production by ONGC and OIL, he added.
Dharamvir said that the average natural gas production in the year 2012-13 was about 111.4 million standard cubic meter per day (MMSCMD) as against the production of 130.3 MMSCMD in 2011-12 .
As on April 1 last year, balance recoverable crude oil and natural gas reserves in the country were 758.42 MMT and 1351.53 billion cubic metre (BCM) respectively, he added.
Imphal West DC Radhakumar and IOC Imphal State Level Coordinator KI Singh were the guests of honour of the function.
