Imphal, November 15 2013 :
In the backdrop of panic buying of salt following rumours about its shortage in the main market places, activists of Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM), a conglomerate of different women organisations would be launching drive in the capital city's markets as well as district headquarters from tomorrow onward.
Speaking to newspersons at the Wahengbam Leikai office of PPCM today, Committee advisor Ramani asked the State authorities to take necessary action for checking trade mal-practices by the business community with the assertion that shortage is artificial.
Speculating that traders might be responsible for spreading the rumour to sell off expired salts, she also cautioned the common public to check date of manufacture and whether the salt they are purchasing is iodised.
Ramani also cautioned the traders and stringent action, including shutting down of shops would be undertaken in case salt is found sold above the prescribed rate.
maintaining there is no question of salt running out of stock in the State, the Committee advisor further called for introspection on the genesis of the highly disturbing rumour.
According to Committee convenor Elangbam Chanu Tamphatombi PPCM-affiliated units would carry out similar drives in other districts.
Appealing to the business community not to hoard the essential food item or sell them at exorbitant rate, she suggested that as temporary measure Government of Manipur make salt available at fair price shops.
The convenor also urged the general public to convey information about sale of salt at exorbitant rate by traders through mobile Nos.897492910 and 9612848340 .
