Frenzied public today swarmed up shops at Moreh town in their efforts to purchase salt as rumour about shortfall in salt supply hit them.
Although people did not bother to dig deeper where the rumour has began, they bought salt in bulk.
There are some who purchased a kg of salt at Rs 80 .
Acting swiftly, Moreh police went to shops and asked the shop owners not to hike the price of salt.
Meanwhile, a team of volunteers led by AMSU Chandel district president, Nabakumar went around the town and asked the shop keepers not to sell salt at exorbitant price.
Later, a joint team of AMSU, MCM and Kha-Nongpok Apunba Nupi Lup launched a publicity drive against the rumour and selling salt at steep rate.
All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Chandel district distributed common salt at subsidised rate at Moreh today.
Two businessmen M Mohon Tamil and Nathani Prashant Jaswal took out salt from their respective godowns and distributed it to the general public.
