Imphal, July 11 2012:
Chief Minister Okram ibobi Singh has informed members of the Legislative Assembly that a special team of Ukhrul district police led by the SP (Ukhrul) is carrying out search operations to trace whereabouts of Nongdam Maning Leikai resident Irungbam Irabanta.
As Andro AC MLA Th Shyamkumar moved a call attention motion seeking information on the whereabouts of sand/stone supplier Irabanta, claimed to have abducted by NSCN (IM) activists, the CM said whether or not the NSCN (IM) is involved in the case is being verified with relevant officials of the Central Government, with whom the armed organisation is engaged in a peace talk.
Ibobi further maintained that based on the report filed by Irabanta' wife at Lamlai police station on June 8 regarding her husband remaining traceless since May 27 after leaving home in a white colour Maruti Gypsy, all the police stations have been alerted through wireless messages.
The CM also cited belated report (after 10 days) to the police on the missing case for the insignificant progress of the investigation till date.
Further informing the House that the Maphou Dam Project Manager had already annulled sand/stone supply agreement with Irabanta when the latter went missing, Ibobi disclosed that Irabanta went to Ukhrul on May 27 to meet one Winner Tangkhul and since the said day the construction material supplier remains traceless.
He also opined that Irabanta might be in the custody of the NSCN (IM) cadres.
Earlier, raising the motion Trinamool Congress legislator Th Shyamkumar claimed that Irabanta left home following an intimation from NSCN (IM) members and even contended that there is fear Irabanta might have been slain and buried.
The MLA also demanded what course of action Government of Manipur had undertaken to check nefarious activities of the rebel group who are currently holding peace parleys with the Central Government.
