World Population Day observed at various places

The World Population Day was observed on July 11 at Maibi Lampak, Thongju Part-II under the aegis of Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension, Manipur University with the theme Universal Access to Reproductive Health Services.
The observance programme was graced by Chirom Romeo, Pradhan of Thongju Part-II GP; Prof T Gambhir Singh, Department of Community Medicine, RIMS and Dr Lamalu Thaimei, Head (In-charge), Department of ACEE, MU as the chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Lamalu Thaimei said the department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension has been organising World Population Day in the MU campus since the inception of the department.
Dr Lamalu said the Day is organised beyond the wall of the University campus this year feeling the need to sensitise the youths, adolescents and women on the effect of over-population.
Speakers of the occasion underscored the need to introduce sex education in educational institutions in India in line with the Western countries so as to impart awareness on sexually transmitted diseases.
It has also been attributed that most of the social problems are directly or indirectly connected with the abnormal rise of population either within the family or a state.
Resource persons of the occasion included Prof T Gambhir Singh, Dr B Gokulchandra Sharma, MU Health Centre; and Dr S Gunadhor, retired Principal of RK Sanatombi Devi College of Education.
Meanwhile, NYK Imphal, in collaboration with District Family Welfare, Imphal West has inaugurated the Population Stabilization Fortnight on July 11 at All Manipur Girls' Organisation, Kwakeithel Thiyam Leikai.
The inaugural function was attended by Dr S Bimolakumari, CMO, Imphal West and Dr L Sarojnalini, advisor of AMGO as the chief guest and president respectively while Dr Usha Devi, DFWO was the resource person.
At the same time, NYK Thoubal has organised a population awareness today at Hangul in collaboration with District Family welfare Bureau, Thoubal.
