Lamka, June 20 2014 :
As climate change has gently but visibly impacted life in this remote corner of the country as elsewhere, an extensive two-day workshop and seminar on preserving nature began here today with the local diaspora taking the initiative and the Ministry of DoNER sponsoring the event.
The event jointly organized by Delhi Paite Indongta (DPI) and Environment Friends have roped in all possible means to deliver their objective as it rope-in functionaries of the World Wildlife Fund, the Tourism Department of Sikkim, and eminent persons from Mizoram and other States.
Chief Guest of the function, Parliamentary Secretary Vungzagin Valte formally visited the green exhibition displaying the works of the two environmentalists and photographs depicting the degradation of the nature.
His visit was preceded by a round table consultation with educators and eminent persons who have attended on invitation while he later in the day launched three green initiatives the green school initiative, green volunteers and eco-tourism.
Dr Chingnunsiam spoke on 'Lamka environment hygiene' during the interactive session of the workshop while Biaklun Shoute talked on 'Handwashing the Hindustan Unilevers Limited way.' A team from Sikkim presented a paper on eco-tourism as a means of mitigating environment issues, K Vungzamawi on 'Stable land based farming and its importance for environment,' retired bureaucrat Haukhum Hauzel on 'New Land use policy and green initiative,' and Khamsuanmung DFO (S) on 'green initiatives for Lamka' .
Soumen Dey from World Wildlife Fund made a presentation on Web of Life.
The exhibition gallery of the event was a hit for its exceptional content, as the weatherman Ginpu and environment activist TK Tungnung presented records of rainfall maintained since 1984 along with the multifarious species collected by the latter since 1999 .
Data of the weather said drizzle before May 15 indicates a good year while it was the opposite if rain comes after that.
He also claimed that devastating storms are likely only before May 15 .
December without rain was usually followed by a good year, he said.
In his 30 years of maintaining records, Ginpu's data indicated that all but 7 seven are good-years.
The bad years are 1990 with 136 days of rain, 2004 06 with drizzle recorded for over a little hundred days each, 2008 and 2009 and 2011 .
TK Tungnung said that he started collecting different types of species, mainly insects when he was in Class V.He pursued the same even after his Graduation in Biotechnology and today he has over 700 species in his long list of collection.
"Any science student would have known how to preserve them", said Tungnung.
With a good number of the species he had collected still unidentified, the young naturalist said he had not approach any agency to help him identify his unknown collection.
