Imphal, April 08 2021:
Following MLA L Rameshwor's recent comments on drugs and elected representatives, the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has registered a suo-motu case under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 .
L Rameshwor, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Board had alleged that some Ministers/MLAs and police officers seem to be very close to drug lords and they seem to be backing them.
The BJP MLA was speaking at an event on April 3 at Paradise Academy under the theme "Youths for Future" organised by the International Peace and Social Advancement (IPSA), Kangleipak when he made the comments.
Taking up a suo-motu case based on the news reports today, the MHRC noted that the allegations levelled by a sitting MLA against other Ministers, MLAs and police officers for their alleged nexus with drug lords and kingpins is very serious in nature and therefore the matter deserves the intervention of the Commission.
The menace of drugs may have devastating human rights violation consequences and undermines the rights to health and the collective human rights of the citizens, said the Commission.
The Commission then asked the Special Secretary (Home), Government of Manipur and Director General of Police to examine the contents of the news reports and make necessary inquiry/investigation and submit a report on or before May 5.The Commission fixed May 5 for further proceeding.
