Imphal, November 11 2020:
The just concluded by-elections in five Constituencies were a litmus test which confirmed that the people of Manipur have their trust intact in the BJP-led Government.
BJP winning the elections is the same as the Chief Minister winning confidence votes which has reaffirmed that the present Government will complete its full term, said BJP State unit spokesperson Chongtham Bijoy today.
It may be noted that the BJP with 23 MLAs now is the single largest party in the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
It had won three seats out of four in the by-elections held on November 7.Oinam Lukhoi from Wangoi Assembly Constituency, Paonam Brojen from Wangjing-Tentha AC, Ngamthang Haokip from Saitu AC had won the three seats for BJP in the by-elections.
The party had also secured a seat earlier when its candidate Ginsuanhau was elected uncontested from Singnat Assembly Constituency.
Above this, the High Court in a landmark verdict recently had also given BJP a seat by declaring Congress' Yengkhom Surchandra's 2017 election null and void and electing M Rameshwar as MLA of Kakching Assembly Constituency.
Speaking at BJP's office at Nityaipat Chuthek today, Ch Bijoy said the candidates had full support of the party's organisations.
The party had a strong belief that its candidates would win the by-elections.
Even though a tough fight was anticipated, the party had predicted that the Congress would get zero.
The results have shown the same.
The combination of Professor S Tikendra as the new BJP State president and N Biren Singh as Chief Minister has compounded the success of BJP in the elections, he said.
He continued that the results have shown clearly that the Congress party has been "rejected" in the hills and valley alike.
Congress playing "vote bank politics on communal line has become outdated".
The results have shown that even Muslims are not buying their politics, Bijoy said.
Congress' observer Bhakt Charan Das and Govindas Konthoujam in Wangoi during election campaigns had accused the BJP of being anti-Muslim and they had promised welfare for Muslim if elected, Bijoy said adding the same Muslims have rejected them and their words.
"Congress should remember that one of their candidates has got less votes than NOTA.
Congress party is a sinking ship," Bijoy said.
Bijoy then lobbed attacks on the NPP, which is a partner of the BJP in the Government and accused it of being a "destabilising factor in Manipur politics".
He asserted that the NPP losing the election in Wangoi has shown people's rejection of the party.
Bijoy further said that the NPP had not performed its part of being a partner in the BJP-led Government.
"L Jayentakumar, who had won election on NPP ticket had submitted resignation paper just a month after N Biren Singh took oath as Chief Minister.
This had created political upheaval in the Government.
When he was Minister, an officer of his Department was suspended on corruption charges and in return he had accused Chief Minister N Biren Singh of interfering in his Department," said Bijoy.
He then went on to say that the NPP, despite being a coalition partner in the Government, had not supported BJP's candidate, Leishemba Sanajaoba in the Rajya Sabha election.
The by-election result of the Wangoi Assembly Constituency has proved that the people have rejected NPP's politics, said Bijoy appealing the NPP to remain a "good partner till the end of the present term of the Government".
The Governments in the Centre and the State have not been able to perform properly due to disturbances Congress gave.
However, the remaining term of the Government will witness more developmental works, he said, appealing the Congress to be a constructive Opposition in the interest of the people.
"Playing destructive politics will only result in more severe consequences than it (Congress) got in the by-elections," he said.
BJP spokesperson Nongpok Nganba and general secretary L Deben
were also present.
