Imphal, November 11 2020:
The All Manipur Muslim Organisations' Co-ordinating Committee (AMMOCOC) has appealed the State Government to include at least a Meitei-Pangal MLA in the State's Cabinet of Ministers.
During a press conference held at AMMOCOC's office, its president SM Jalal stated that Meitei Pangal Community has been conferred political reservation since 1947 with the adoption of Manipur State Constitution and there is a long tradition of allotting Ministerial portfolios to Meitei Pangal MLAs during the rule of Interim Government, he added.
As such, at least one MLA belonging to the community has been included as a Cabinet Minister almost in every term of the Government, he said while expressing regret that no MLA belonging to the Meitei-Pangal community has been incorporated by the incumbent Government which was formed in 2017.To help Meitei Pangal representative also take part in the decision and policy making process and to help address the grievances the community is facing, the State Government should at least allot a Ministerial berth to at least one of Meitei Pangal MLA in the larger interest of the State and Meitei Pangals, he appealed.
The AMMOCOC president also expressed hope that the State Government will come up with a positive solution to the Meitei-Pangal students' reservation issue at the earliest.
Through some sources, AMMOCOC has learnt that the State Cabinet has started discussion on the issue, he said while lauding the State Government for instituting a committee to look into the matter.
He further appealed to include an academician from the community and a representative from among the CSOs in the said committee to effectively deal with the issue.
