Vumlunmang Vualnam bereaved Capt Dongzathang (IRS) laid to rest

An honest and loving soul who had excelled in his profession and rose on to become one of the few people from North Eastern region to have been on the invitee list of Rashtrapati Bhavan before he retired as President Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Capt V Dongzathang IRS was laid to rest today at his native village of Pearsonmun, Churachandpur.
He was 80.The father of Vumlunmang Vualnam, Principal Secretary to the GoM, Capt V Dongzathang suffered a massive stroke on September 9 at the official residence of his son at Officer's Colony Sanjenthong, Imphal.
He was immediately taken to JNIMS and treated there for 53 days before he breathed his last on November 1, 2021; the same date he was born in 1941 at Savaipaih village, Thanlon sub-divison.
The youngest among 4 sisters and 2 brothers, Captain Dongzathang did his schooling at Kaihlam village under the then NEIG mission, Rostad Memorial HS, Churachandpur HS and Bengali HS Imphal.
He then completed his IA (Intermediate) and graduation from DM College before joining the Faculty of Law, Delhi University.
He left the law faculty after two years to join the Indian Army as Emergency Commissioned Officer in 1963.He retired from the Army in 1967 as a Captain.
The same year he joined the Indian Civil Service as an IRS officer.
Capt Dongzathang had a very successful career as an IRS officer as he rose to become an accountant member of ITAT and eventually had the distinction of serving as President of IATA, a post that is equivalent to Secretary, Government of India from 1999 till his retirement in 2003.He is said to have made significant contribution in getting approval of the Government of India in the appointment of the President ITAT from amongst the Revenue Service Officers as the earlier practice was to appoint them from the judicial services.
He is survived by his wife Pari Tonsing, 3 sons and a daughter, besides 13 grandchildren.
