Liangmai folk song competition held

With an aim to preserve Liangmai folk songs, Liangmai Foundation organised its second Liangmai folk song competition on October 30 in virtual mode.
Liangmai Foundation is a tribal based research group, founded mainly by the Liangmais settling in Manipur and Nagaland.
In a release, organising committee member Wicham Dinbo Mataina informed that altogether 59 singers participated and presented Liangmai folk songs in the 2021 edition.
The competition was held in two categories with Huton-bou Mataina of Kuilong village Winning the first prize, Pingdin of Nzau village in Nagaland second and Kaidauping of Jalukie B also in Nagaland bagging the second and third prize respectively.
In the female category, Disurailiu of Kuilong village was declared the winner followed by Wijotniliu of Rienta village and Wikhonlungliu of Chiang securing the second and third prize respectively.
The top three winners were awarded cash prize Rs 5000, Rs 4000 and Rs 3000 respectively while all the participants were presented Rs 500 each.
As a part of the event, a special talk on the theme 'Save your oral tradition and stay away from cultural amnesia' was also conducted was delivered by professor Anvita Abbi, a renowned linguist and a champion in documentation and description of endangered languages and minority languages, the release said, adding that professor Abbi encouraged the participants to be the creator, consumer and preserver of Liangmai culture and story.
Meanwhile, the Organising Committee expressed gratitude to Forest minister Awangbow Newmai and Nagaland MLA and advisor to Water Resources Namri Nchang for sponsoring the prize money.
