Lack of precipitation worries farmers

Imphal, July 02 2021: Expressing concern over delay in arrival of the monsoon or scanty seasonal rainfall in different parts of the state, Khangabok Development Society said that farmers of Manipur are facing serious inconveniences in starting paddy plantation works due to lack of water.

In a release, KDS publicity secretary N Kirankumar stated that lack of precipitation hindering cultivation has added more burden to the already aggrieved famers who have been severely affected by Covid-19 pandemic.

While pointing out that it is not the age to wait for seasonal rainfall for cultivation, Kirankumar said that government has been taking up initiatives including developing irrigation facilities and construction of dams to ensure availability of water to the farm lands.

However, the success rate of such initiative is very low and many farm lands are yet to get adequate irrigation water for cultivation, he added.

Informing that Hayel Loukon, which lies between Hayel Loubuk and Cha-rangpat, is facing acute shortage of water thereby hindering the cultivation process, Kirankumar conveyed that farmers are using water tank to irrigate the parched farm lands with a strong conviction to cultivate food crops for the people of the state.It is unfortunate for the people and the farmers in particular that the government has not been able to come up with a mechanism to solve the problem of lack of water for cultivation, he contended, while urging the government to chalk up effective plans to improve the irrigation networks at the earliest.
