Imphal, July 02 2021:
Apunba Imagi Ma-chasing (AIMS) has submitted a memorandum to fisheries minister Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh requesting to declare a 'Fishing Holiday' during breeding season of fishes in Manipur.
In a release, AIMS director Dr Atom Sunil Singh stated that the memo explained in detail that the state government needs to impose restrictions on fishing from July to August each year to conserve fish stocks in Manipur during the breeding season.
In order to avoid disturbances during the breeding season, fishermen should be instructed not to catch fish during the restricted period.
This will help in unhindered breeding of fish and conserve fish species during the monsoon, which is the spawning season for many varieties of fishes in Manipur, it noted.
AIMS asserted that declaration of Fishing Holiday would help conserve the fish stock and increase the locally available fish population.
It will also help reduce import of fish from outside Manipur and consequently boost the economy of the fishermen.
Thus, it is very pertinent to declare a 'Fishing Holiday' during the breeding period, it reiterated.
