Imphal, February 24 2023:
Expressing concern over the influx of illegal immigrants and the associated risks, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and the United Naga Council (UNC) have urged the Government to set up a Population Commission and initiate National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise at the earliest.
In a joint statement, COCOMI and UNC said that the continuous influx of immigrants into the State is causing serious threat to the demography of the region.
Saying that the State has also been witnessing other issues such as loss of forest areas, massive deforestation, drug smuggling and unaccounted influx of 'outsiders', COCOMI and UNC asserted that the State needs to pull up its socks and take some real actions to solve the issues.
The joint statement went on to state that they (COCOMI and UNC) have been urging both the State Government and the Centre to begin NRC exercise, constitute a Population Commission and refrain from recognising new villages without proper verification and scrutiny.
Saying that the State Government, however, seems to be not taking such issues seriously, COCOMI and UNC continued that the problems will only get larger if not resolved at the earliest.
The Govt must do something serious to save the State and her people from demographic imbalance and pressure from illegal immigrants.
COCOMI and UNC will take their own course of action if the Government fails to act, they added.
