Churachandpur, February 24 2023:
All the 28 Myanmarese refugees including six minors who were kept at Sadbhavna Mandap, New Lamka, here, which served as a temporary detention centre, have been shifted to Imphal around 1:30 pm by Manipur Police on Friday.
According to sources, these Myanmarese nationals had crossed the Indo-Myanmar border unable to bear the brunt of alleged atrocities committed on them by Myanmar's Military Junta there and as the economic activities had greatly been hampered after the country witnessed violent clashes between the pro-democratic forces and the Junta regime.
At the detention centre, they were allowed to carry on with activities such as handloom and other types of weaving to support their livelihood.
Initially, there were 55 people with 17 minors at the said detention centre.
However, in a sudden turn of event on December 22, 2022, three people were reported as missing by the police, which watched over them.
Thereafter, the refugees were kept under strict vigil and supervision with none allowed to even venture out of the campus.
Sources also revealed that in an earlier development on January 24, acting on the state government's directives, the state police had taken 24 of them to Imphal with remaining 28 people shifted to Imphal on Friday.
