Awareness on trafficking held

Imphal, December 12 2011:
District ICDS Cell, Imphal West and Social Welfare Department in association with the Human Rights Law Network (Manipur) have organized a one day awareness programme on Trafficking at EEMA Conference Hall of Keishampat Junction.
A release issued by Human Rights Law Network (Manipur) informed that S Radhapyari Devi, Secretary, Economic & Environment Management Association (EEMA) and Wahengbam Joykumar, Deputy Ombudsman (MNREGA), Imphal East were the president and chief guest of the
programme respectively.
Thokchom Premlata, advocate and assistant director, Human Rights Law Network (Manipur) has spoke on the topic "Possible legal intervention against human trafficking" and M Ranjana, Programme officer, district ICDS cell, Imphal West on the topic "Problems of trafficking in Manipur" .
Advocate Premlata stated that Trafficking human beings, especially women and children has become a serious matter of national and international concern.
Women and children, boys and girls have been exposed to unprecedented vulnerability and commercial exploitation of these vulnerability has become a massive organized crime and a multi-million dollar business.
She also maintained that trafficking of children is a worldwide phenomenon affecting large numbers of boys and girls everyday.
Unless laws based on public opinion are effectively designed and implemented along with constant monitoring of the incidents, children will continue to be trafficked.
Coordinated efforts are required to stop and prevent child trafficking, she suggested.
