Chief Electoral Officer PC Lawmkunga has stated that next year's Assembly elections would see a marked difference from the previous elections, particularly on monitoring election expenditures, and polling activities in hyper sensitive polling stations would be webcast live.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, CEO PC Lawmkunga stated that the basic purpose of the election monitoring activity would be preventing candidates of the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections from making illegal expenditures.
To take make an assessment of the preparations being made in the State for the Assembly election, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr SY Quraishi would come to the State on a two-day visit on December 14 and 15 along with Election Commissioners VS Sampath and HS Verma.
The CEC and his team would hold a meeting with representatives of political parties in connection with the forthcoming election at Imphal.
The team would also hold another meeting with Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police.
This would be followed by another meeting together the Chief Secretary, the DGP and other security agencies.
In connection with the scheduled visit of the CEC and his team, the Chief Secretary has convened a meeting tomorrow afternoon.
The scheduled visit of the CEC and his team to Imphal would focus on monitoring election-related expenditures, conveyed PC Lawmkunga.
Reports sought by the CEO from DCs about the number of licensed guns issued in their respective districts have also been received and they are being examined, he said.
As for Imphal East district, the DC has prohibited issuance of new gun licences until the elections are over.
Welcoming this initiative taken up by the Imphal East DC, the CEO expressed desire that other DCs follow suit.
On being enquired about yesterday's election-related incident at Thoubal Moijing, the CEO said that the they cannot do anything as election notification has not been issued yet.
Informing that voters would not be allowed to take mobile phones inside polling stations, PC Lawmkunga stated that polling activities in hyper sensitive polling stations would be webcasted live.
Preparations for the elections are almost complete.
Final electoral rolls would be published on January 2 next year, he added.
