Woman shot at, accused missing

Imphal, December 12 2011:
A 43-year-old woman received gunshot wound when a man attacked her over payment of debt at Sagolband Bijoygovinda Mamang Leikai in Imphal West district under Lamphel police station on Monday.
The accused is absconding.
The victim has been identified as R.K.Thabaton, 43 D/o late R.K.Modhusana, a resident of Sagolband Bijoygovinda Mamang Leikai while the accused as one R.K.Naocha, 28 S/o Late R.K.Tomba of Sagolband Bijoygovinda Thangapat.
Thabaton was rushed to the RIMS hospital after she sustained one bullet injury on her left thigh in the attack.
Sources said the homestead of the victim, Thabaton had been mortgaged by her elder brother Kullachandra for the last four years to one Kiranmala, a cousin of the accused.
A few days back, the mortgager was asked to return the money she borrowed and warned that failure to do so within 10 days would result in her being force out of the mortgaged land.
Today being the last day of the deathline, the mortgagee, Kiranmala came to the residence along with her cousin Naocha but Thabaton failed to return the money resulting in an altercation.
According to eyewitnesses, Kiranmala and Naocha left the residence after a brief quarrel but Naocha came back with a gun and fired two rounds at Thabaton and her brother Bijoy.
One gunshot hit the left thigh of Thabaton while the other missed.
He was also trying to shoot Bijoy but failed as the gun got jammed.
Injured Thabaton yelled for help attracting the attention of many local residents.
On seeing them, Naocha hurriedly escaped from the place and has been missing since then.
A case has been registered in connection with the incident at the Lamphel police station and the mother of the accused, R.K.Prnimashi, Kiranmala and her mother in law Memma were taken in custody for investigation, a police source said.
Later Kiranmala's newly built house was ransacked by a mob of local people infuriated by the incident.
