Ukhrul can become trade hub : Govindas

Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam has said that Ukhrul district can become the hub of trade and commerce as it shares a boundary with Myanmar on three sides.
The Minister made the observation while inaugurating the 30th Shirui Lily Cup at Wino Bazar.
At the function, Govindas also expressed desire to develop excellent sporting infrastructure in the district.
The Minister said that he, however, was shocked on seeing a placard at TM Kasom which read "No Compensation, No Work", claiming that the Government has already compensated the locals affected by the highway expansion project.
Saying that a good road is essential to project the State's economy on a higher trajectory, Govindas reiterated that Ukhrul can be developed as a trade centre as it shares a border with the neighbouring country.
The State Government will establish three border haat to boost 'our economy,' he maintained, continuing that upgrading NH-102(A) is essential to ensure better road connectivity.
Govindas also asked why the venue of the Shirui Lily Football Tournament at Wino Bazar is not developed.
Saying that the Government is ready to release funds for the development of the ground, the Minister urged all concerned to settle the land dispute.
The Minister also lauded the people of Ukhrul district for producing many notable athletes.
Informing that a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to establish a Football Academy in Manipur, Govindas said that the Government has a plan to set up better sporting infrastructure in all districts.
Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Chunglenmang Kipgen felicitated the visiting Minister with Tangkhul head gear and traditional spear.
Veteran footballer Dr Somi Sareo who is also a member of Ukhrul District Sports Association (UDSA) unfurled the UDSA flag and opened the tournament by kicking a football in the presence of Ukhrul Superintendent of Police (SP) Ningsem Vashum and Caretaker Chairman of Ukhrul ADC Mark Luithing among others.
Altogether 12 teams from Imphal, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Kangpokpi, Chandel, Churachandpur and Noney are participating in the Shirui Lily Trophy.
