Law Minister highlights essence of Constitution Day

Imphal, November 26 2022: As in other parts of the country, the Constitution Day was observed in different parts of the State today in commemoration of the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly in 1949 .

The State level function was held at Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) in the attendance of Law and Legislative Affairs Minister Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh as chief guest.

During the function, the Minister and other dignitaries present took a pledge to uphold the Constitution of India.

Addressing the gathering, Basanta Kumar spoke about the significance of holding the event annually.

He said that the decision to declare November 26 as Constitution Day or National Law Day was taken during an inauguration ceremony of a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar on October 11, 2015 to imbibe "Constitutional values among residents" .

Basanta Kumar further stated that there is a growing need for the younger generations to understand the value of 'our Constitution' and the idea of India.

Saying that Dr BR Ambedkar, also known as the Father of Indian Constitution, was the chairman of the drafting committee, the Minister maintained that the contribution made by Dr Ambedkar to the Nation was immense.

While expressing desire for the students of Law College to attend such programmes, Basanta Kumar stated that every Indian must not ignore their duties while talking about their rights so as to take the Nation to greater heights.

The observance organised by Law and Legislative Affairs Department was also attended by Advocate General of Manipur Lenin Singh Hijam, Commissioner (Law) Nungshitombi Athokpam, Director of Prosecution A Nilachandra Singh , Government Advocate (High Court) RK Umakanta, All Manipur Bar Association president P Tomcha Meetei and All Manipur Lady Advocates Association president Ch Kiranbala Devi, among others.

Seva Bharati, Manipur also observed the day at Nagamapal today.

There, Advocate Bishwoijit said that there is no point of having a Constitution if people don't obey it.

Unlike the executive, legislature and judiciary, the citizens of the Nation are above the Constitution as rules will have no value if the masses don't accept it, he added.

Manipur Peoples' Democratic Front (MPDF) also observed the day.
