Imphal, March 21 2023:
Stating that Manipur Land Revenue & Land Reforms Act 1960 is not in tune with the present times, Senior Citizens for Society Manipur general secretary advocate Khaidem Mani proposed enacting a new Act acceptable to people of both the hills and the valley.
Speaking to media persons at his Loklaobung residence on Tuesday, Khaidem Mani asserted that claiming the land as their own by some people with parochial or sectarian outlook has strong potential to trigger outrage in a multi-ethnic state like Manipur while pointing out that every inch of the land, be it in hill or valley, belong to the state.
He said that the government should implement NRC to prevent influx of outsiders and set up population commission to detect the infiltrators.
In Manipur which has around 35 different ethnic communities, it is unfortunate that politics on sectarian lines is being done, he contended, while urging all the communities not to have such idea and instead work together for a united Manipur.
While opining that the conflict situation created among communities over land is due to instigation by external as well as internal forces, he cautioned that amid the palpable tension in the society, outsiders from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Nepal are residing in the state disguising themselves as indigenous people.
The protest launched by seven student bodies in Delhi demanding implementa tion of NRC in the state is reasonable.
The Senior Citizens for Society Manipur also endorses the students' movement, he continued, while adding that the Society will support the government if it takes up good initiatives.
