Imphal, March 21 2023:
In a major disappointment, the process of lifting water from Loktak Lake upto Malom to supply to the people in Imphal and surrounding areas affected by water crisis have failed to complete on time.
Earlier, sources at the Water Resources Department (WRD) said that the process of lifting water from Loktak Lake through Loktak Lift Irrigation upto Malom would be completed by March 20 while the people will be able to get the water from March 21 onwards.
As per the sources, completion of the water lifting work of fresh water from near National Hydro Electric Project (NHEP) at Ningthoukhong using intake pumps of Loktak Lift Irrigation (LLI) will take another two to three days.
The lifted water is to be released near Malom Oil Depot through the 18 Km long Imphal Low Canal for supply to people using tanker trucks.
Reportedly, the lifted water from Loktak Lake has reached upto Nambol Maibam Lokpa Ching till the time of filing this report and it will reach Malom within two or three days.
The officials at the WRD said that the process of lifting water couldn't be done 24x7 as water level at the source is lesser than the pumping capacity of LLI intake pumps for some hours daily (5pm to 8pm) .
They also said that the officials of NHDC have been intimated to not cause any obstruction while lifting water from the Loktak Lake while the NHDC is in talks with their senior officials.
The officials further stated that they have been holding talks with the NHDC officials so as to pump the water from Loktak Lake throughout the day as the process of lifting water from the lake can be disturbed there is any interruption while lifting water from the lake.
