Training workshop on IUCN Red List status of freshwater fishes kicks off

A 2-day training workshop on "Assessment of IUCN Red List Status of Freshwater Fishes from Selected Northeast States of India" kicked off today at Castle Hotel, Palace Compound organized by the Department of Zoology, Manipur University in collaboration with German Development Cooperation, GIZ India.
The training workshop is a part of activities under Indo-German bilateral cooperation project 'Protection and sustainable management of aquatic resources in North-Eastern Himalayan Region of India (NERAQ)' in partnership with MoEFCC and funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI) .
In a press release the Manipur University, the main objective of the workshop is to understand the risks of fish species in the Northeast region.
More than 30 experts, scientists, researchers, academia, from different parts of India attended the events.
It is expected to train assessors from different parts of India by IUCN experts on the assessment process and criteria in this two days' workshop.
In his inaugural address, Professor M Premjit, former Vice-Chancellor, Central Agricultural University; Professor R Varatharajan, Dean School of Life Science Manipur University; Professor Th Binoy Singh, Head of Department Zoology Manipur University spoke about threats of fishes in Northeast India and urgent needs of their conservation.
Patricia Dorn, Project Manager of the NERAQ project gave an overview of the Indo-German NERAQ project.
