Workshop on freshwater fish held

Imphal, March 21 2023:
In collaboration with German Development Cooperation, GIZ India; Manipur University organised a training workshop on "Assessment of IUCN Red List Status of Freshwater Fish from Selected Northeast States of India" at The Castle Hotel, Palace Compound, here, on Tuesday.
The assessment is the part of activities under the Indo German bilateral cooperation project 'Protection and sustainable management of aquatic resources in North-Eastern Himalayan Region of India (NERAQ)' in partnership with MoEFCC and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI) .
According to a release of Manipur University, the main objective of the work shop was to understand the risks of fish species in the Northeast region.
More than 30 experts, scientists, researchers and academia from different parts of India attended the event, it informed.
In the inaugural function, Central Agricultural University former vice chancellor Prof M Premjit, MU Dean School of Life Science Prof R Varatharajan and MU head of department Zoology Prof Th Binoy Singh spoke about threats to fishes in Northeast India and urgent needs for their conservation as NERAQ project manager Patricia Dorn presented an overview of Indo-German NERAQ project.
A plenary lecture on Assessment and Evaluation of Freshwater Fish for Conservation' was delivered by Manipur University former professor, W Vishwanath Singh, who is also a taxonomist and former co-chair IUCN-FFSG South Asia Region, the release conveyed.
