Assam Rifles to hold Major Khathing sports meet in Ukhrul

In a tribute to the legendary Late Major Bob Khathing Ralengnao, the 18 Assam Rifles, under the aegis of 10 Sector Assam Rifles (Somsai) is set to commemorate his 113th birth anniversary with a series of sports competitions in Ukhrul town from February 20 to 27 .
The commemoration is held every year in recognition of his service and the enduring impact of his leadership, said the Assam Rifles in a press statement.
The week-long commemoration will witness sporting events including the 5th Baby League Football Competition (Under 12 years) and 8th Women's Volleyball Competition from February 20 to 26 and 11th edition of Men s Football Tournament from February 20 to 27 .
The Baby League Football and Women's Volleyball matches will be held at the Wino Bazar Post of the Assam Rifles, while the Men's Football matches will be conducted in the district headquarters.
To ensure smooth conduct of the scheduled events, a player screening and managers' meeting is scheduled for February 10, at the Wino Bazar AR post.
Interested football and volleyball clubs are invited to collect entry forms from the 18 Assam Rifles Post, Wino Bazar.
Team selection will be done on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of eight teams allowed for each event, the statement informed.
The Assam Rifles invites all sports enthusiasts to support and participate in the tournaments, which aim to promote sportsmanship and foster community engagement.
Late Maj Bob Khathing, a Tangkhul Naga from Ukhrul district of Manipur, was the first tribal to serve as an ambassador for India and played a crucial role in integrating Tawang into the Union of India.
During World War II, he became the first army officer from the state to receive the King's Commission.
