NRC rally staged

Imphal, September 21 2026: Residents, Meira Paibi groups and local clubs from around 10 localities of Keishampat staged a protest rally today, demanding updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as the base year before any census exercise is undertaken in the State.

The protesters raised slogans demanding protection of the indigenous population and urged the Government to take concrete steps to address concern regarding de- mographic changes in the State.

The rally was, however, stopped by police at Keishampat Junction shortly after it began from Keisham-thong Hodam Leirak, where heavy security deployment was made to prevent the protesters from proceeding further.

Speaking to the media, the protesters maintained that the NRC should be updated on the basis of 1951 records and that the Census exercise should not be undertaken until the NRC updation process is completed.

The protesters also demanded that those allegedly involved in illegal activities be dealt with in accordance with the law, while urging the Government to take effective measures against alleged illegal immigration and infiltration.

They further appealed to the Government to ensure that persons linked to armed Kuki militant groups are not allowed to enter or settle in areas outside designated arrangements, and called for strict enforcement of the law against those found violating it.

The protesters also expressed concern over alleged attempts to alter the demographic composition of Manipur.

They urged the Government to take appropriate measures to prevent further demographic changes in the State.

The protesters maintained that their demands were aimed at protecting the rights and future of the indigenous people of Manipur.
