Imphal, June 24 2010: The Manipur State Minorities Commission has conveyed heartfelt gratitude to Government of Manipur for the Cabinet decision to implement scheme of 'modernisation of madrashas' as had been enshrined in the Prime Minister's 15 Point Programme.

Noting that the State cabinet in its meeting held on June 23 approved sanctioning of Rs 1.5 crore to the State WKF Board for implementation of the Scheme in 30 selected madrashas in Manipur, the Commission's Secretary Md Raheijuddin Sheikh confided to newspersons at his office chamber today that the scheme will be implemented soon by introducing general studies on subjects concerning language, science, social science and mathematics in addition to normal Islamic studies.

He further informed that the Commission had been urging upon the Government for implementation of the scheme since the last two years.

Moreover, the minorities' panel on July 9, 2009 organised a public debate on the 'modernisation of Madrashas in manipur' in association with the Federation of Madrashas, Manipur.

The resolution of the debate was forwarded to the State Government for follow-up action at the earliest, the Secretary added.

On the other hand, Federation of Madrashas, Manipur has hailed the State Cabinet recommendation of identifying 30 madrashas located in different parts of the State for extending grant-in-aid and introduction of other general subjects.

Addressing a press conference in this regard at Jama Masjid, Sadar Bazar, Masjid Road, Imphal here today, secretary of the Federation Mufti Salatur Rahaman informed that there are in all 179 institutes including 72 madrasas that are being run based in Islamic character in different parts of the State.

All these institutes are registered under Wakf Board, Manipur.

Of the 72 madrashas, 16 are located in Imphal East, 19 in Imphal West, 31 in Thoubal and 6 in Bishnupur.

80 percent of the Muslim children are studying in these madrasas.

But the failure of the Govt to recognised these madrasas all these years have caused lot of inconveniences in the administration.

So the Cabinet decision of identifying 30 madrasas for providing grant-in-aid and introduction of general subjects like Science, English, Computer, Mathematics, etc is appreciable., Salatur said.

After the press conference, a joint prayer session was held for the successful implementation of the Cabinet recommendation.

MOBC Minister Md Allauddin was also present at the occasion.
