Ukhrul, October 21 2025:
Poor infrastructure and inadequate staff at schools and District Hospital Kamjong have peeved the Zingsho.
Katamnao Long (ZKL)/Eastern Tangkhul Student Union.
Briefing media persons, Khanso Nekhedei, president of the ZKL, said a team of the student union inspected schools and the District Hospital and found them severely lacking adequate infrastructure and staff to function efficiently.
The student union found the Kamjong Higher Secondary School totally neglected, Khanso said.
The school has a total of 274 students.
Of these, 32 are enrolled in Class-XII and 42 are enrolled in Class-XI.
The school was upgraded to higher secondary status in 2021 .
The State Education Department has appointed one Principal in-charge, seven Lecturers and 1 utilized Lecturer.
The school, however, has no Lecturers for Science streams and Social Science.
The absence of teachers for the streams has jeopardised the career of the students, and it has compelled many students to change schools or drop out, Khanso said.
Similarly, there are only four Regular and two Contractual Lecturers at the Phungyar Higher Secondary School, he said.
The school has no Lecturers for Mathematics, Home Science, Education and Geography.
While the school should have at least 53 teachers, it is being manned by eleven teachers including the 6 Lecturers of the higher secondary level section, Khanso said.
Both the institutions, Kamjong Higher Secondary School and Phungyar Higher Secondary School lack required infrastructure.
The schools have no access to clean and safe drinking water.
Both have no smart classrooms, no Science and Arts Blocks, and some classrooms need immediate repair, Khanso said.
Construction of Science Block, Arts Block and Girl's Hostel at Kamjong Higher Secondary School is yet to be completed, while the Staff Quarters and Boy's Hostel are in poor condition, Khanso added.
The student leader then decried the "pitiful condition" of the District Hospital, Kamjong.
The number of posts sanctioned for the District Hospital is 20, which include 10 posts of medical officers and 10 Staff Nurses.
However, the hospital has only four doctors and one Staff Nurse, Khanso said.
He said the hospital is unable to deliver 24x7 healthcare service to the people of Kamjong district.
The hospital lacks Medical Officers, Nurses, technicians, pharmacists, caretaker and security personnel, he said.
A District Hospital should have at least two Dental Surgeons, ten Medical Officers, one Anesthesiologist, one Physician, one Paediatrician, one-Pathologist, one Surgeon, two Male Health Supervisors, one Ophthalmic Assistant, one Pharmacists (Allopathic), one Upper Division Clerk, one Community Organiser, one Computer Operator.
But, this remains a far cry for the people of Kamjong, Khanso said.
Khanso stressed that some of the rooms of the hospital are leaking from the roof and this has rendered them useless.
Further, the hospital has no Emergency, Trauma Centre and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Block.
The District Hospital should have adequate manpower, and infrastructure including enhanced facilities/centres for Malaria, AIDS, TB and Leprosy.
It also should have a multi-utility guest house including a training hall and an auditorium in the wider interest of the people, Khanso said.
He urged the Government and its relevant departments to look into the issues facing the schools and District Hospital in Kamjong and address them swiftly.
