Twilang cut off, Jiribam flooded

Kpi/Jiri/Spt, June 19 2022: Twilang area of Kangpokpi district has been cut off as T Vaichong sub-divisional headquarters witnessed flash flood this moning as a result of the incessant rainfall which has been lashing the State since the last couple of days.

On the other hand, many parts of Jiribam district have been inundated due to the torrential rain witnessed since the last few days while the water level of Senapati River rose to danger level this morning.

Incessant rainfall triggered flash flood at T Vaichong sub-divisional headquarters this morning at around 7 .

The flash flood created havoc at the main bazar of the sub-divisional headquarters and damaged at least three houses.

The neighbouring villagers rushed to the inundated area and evacuated most of the residents of the bazar area.

The flood carried away a refrigerator, one LPG cylinder and many utensils from a hotel belonging to one Sosei.

Apart from the hotel, the flood also damaged two houses.

Reportedly, the flash flood also inundated a few paddy fields in the area.

Meanwhile, Twilang area comprising more than 80 villages has been completely cut off from the rest of the region as the flash flood carried away a large portion of the PMGSY road between Chawangkining and T Vaichong sub-divisional headquarters via Makui Ashang near the sub-divisional headquarters.

Imphal-Tamenglong road had also been cut off at Lamlenkon by mudslide which is yet to be restored while the alternate PMGSY road from Thonglang Atongba could no longer be used.

A truck reportedly loaded with illegal timbers was dragged to a river by the flash flood.

The ill-fated truck was detained by the Assam Rifles at Banglabung. The flash flood also damaged the protection wall constructed over Twilang/Irang river near T Vaichong sub divisional headquarters.

Multiple landslides were reported at various locations in the area.

A lengthy fissure was seen along the PMGSY road between Harup Naga and Tapon Naga.

A heavy mudslide also reportedly occurred near Thonglang Atongba and it washed away some portions of the road.

KSO Twilang Block president, Enock Kipgen appealed to the authorities concerned to look into their grievances and also extend some sort of compensation to the people whose properties were damaged by the flood.

M Dinpi, general secretary of Liangmai Naga Council Eastern Zone said that a portion of the PMGSY road between Chawangkining and T Vaichong sub-divisional headquarters via Makui Ashang, Tapon Namsan, and Tapon Namguang had been carried away by the flood.

He appealed to the authorities concerned to restore the road at the earliest.

The Sub-Divisional Officer of T Vaichong reportedly rushed to the sub-divisional headquarters but the official could not reach the area.

The SDO, nonetheless dispatched relief materials to the people of T Vaichong sub-divisional headquarters.

Meanwhile, even as many parts of Jiribam district have been inundated due to the torrential rain witnessed since the last few days, water level of Senapati River rose to danger level this morning.

The rise in water level of the Senapati River and widespread inundation in Jiribam have put the people of the two areas in distress as more rain in the coming days would worsen the situation and affect all their activities.

Reportedly, major roads in Jiribam have already been flooded.

It is said that certain examinations of Jiri College are scheduled to begin from tomorrow (June 20), but there is no sign of water receding anytime soon.

The areas which have been worst affected by the flood are Latingkhal, Islamabad, JT Road, Dibong Khunou and Kadamtala Road.

At Senapati, multiple landslides and mudslides reportedly took place in different points while the water level of Senapati River rose to danger level this morning.

According to our Senapati correspondent, the excess water would have entered residential areas had it rained for an hour or so.

The rain, however, stopped at around 9:30 am, following which the water levels of Senapati River and other streamlets which fall into the river receded without causing any harm to human lives.
