The Geological Society of India (GSI) has awarded the prestigious SM Naqvi Gold Medal Award-2025, given biennially, to Prof Athokpam Krishnakanta.
Prof Krishnakanta is Head of Applied Geology at Dr Harisingh Gour University (a Central University) at Sagar, Madhya Pradesh.
Prof Krishnakanta received the National award for his outstanding contributions to igneous petrology and geochemistry.
He is reportedly the first person from North East India to receive this prestigious award.
The award was conferred on him by GSI president Padmashri Prof Harsh K Gupta during an international conference held on "Geodynamic Evolution of Himalaya" at Kumaun University, Uttarakhand on October 7 .
He completed his BSc (Geology) at DM College of Science, Imphal and MSc (Applied Geology) at the Department of Geology, Kurukshetra University (KU), Haryana.
He started his research career at the Kurukshetra University (KU), Haryana, as a Research Scholar after being awarded a University Research Scholarship (URS ) by the KU in 1999 .
Later, he received the Senior Research Fellowship (CSIR-SRF) awarded by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India in 2001 .
He was awarded "BOYSCAST Fellowship" in 2010 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi, to carry out his Post Doctoral Research works (PDF) at the Open University, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom.
Prof Krishnakanta has more than 25 years of research and teaching experience in the field of geochemistry and specialises in the tectonic evolution of the Himalaya, western Peninsular India and Indo-Myanmar Orogenic Belt of North East India.
He has published more than 100 research papers in peer-reviewed National and International Journals, which are well-cited in high-ranking journals.
He has supervised 11 PhDs, mentored Postdoc fellows.
