Delhi protest calls for abrogation of SoO pact

The Naga Students' Union Delhi (NSUD) organised a one-day peaceful solidarity protest at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on Saturday.
The demonstration which brought together students, scholars, tribal leaders, elders, representatives of apex Naga organisations registered strong condemnation of Kuki militants' attacks on civilians and called on the Government of India to scrap the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact.
The protesters demanded justice, security, and an honourable political settlement for the Naga people.
During the protest, Naga Students' Union Delhi (NSUD) president said the violence in Ukhrul, Kamjong are not random but deliberate and targeted attacks on the Nagas.
He alleged the complicity of "certain Assam Rifles personnel" and accused them of aiding armed militant groups.
"The SoO agreement, meant as a peace mechanism, has been weaponized as a 'licence to kill' Nagas," said the NSUD president.
He urged the Government to scrap the SoO agreement immediately, deploy an impartial Central security forces to protect Naga villages and conclude the Indo-Naga political talks with an honourable settlement.
Alino Chishi of the Global Naga Forum (GNF) said the "attacks" in Ukhrul, Kamjong are an attempt to alter the historical and geographical identity of the Nagas.
Alino Chishi said the National Highway 202 � the lifeline of the people of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts have been held hostage by Kuki villages of Shangkai and Mongkot Chepu.
Alino Chishi said, on May 7, the Kuki National Army (Burma) carried out cross-border attacks on 3 Tangkhul Naga villages: Wanglee, Namlee, and Choro.
During the protest demonstration, a representative of the All Naga Students' Association Manipur (ANSAM) said, "The Government of India must sincerely intervene and bring a peaceful solution based on the historical facts of the land owners," ANSAM stated.
The president of the Naga Scholars Association (NSA) said the Nagas' identity is inseparably bound to their land.
"Indigeneity is not manufactured.
Indigeneity comes with the land," said the NSA president, asking Kuki groups to shed what he termed "victim syndrome" .
"You are not a victim, you are the aggressor," said the NSA president presenting 'facts' that the Kukis have had conflicts in the past with scores of communities including the Paites, Zomis, Karbis, Meiteis, and Nagas.
The Government of India cannot bring peace by hurting the indigenous communities of the North East.
It must bring a solution to the Naga political issue without any delay, said the NSA president.
Representatives of the Naga Peoples' Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) and many other Naga organisations also condemned the SoO Kuki militants and called for abrogation of the pact.
They also urged the Government of India to deploy impartial Central security forces in vulnerable Naga villages and bring about a resolution to the Indo-Naga political talks.
They sought accountability and an investigation into alleged Assam Rifles complicity in the violence in Naga areas, and asked the Government to secure the National Highway 202 for ensuring safe civilian movement.
The organisations urged Nagas to unite as one and asked the Government to deliver justice.
