Imphal, August 25 2025:
Even if a popular Government is formed in Manipur, supporting it will be contingent on certain conditions, the National People's Party has said.
NPP, Manipur unit convened its annual general body meeting at Iroisemba yesterday.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, NPP Manipur president Yumnam Joykumar said that a common minimum programme, a roadmap to restore normalcy in Manipur and a clear designation for the coalition Government have to be worked out if the NPP is to be part of the Government.
There was no common minimum programme or a specific name for the coalition Government when the NPP was part of the previous coalition Government, he said.
Notably, NPP which won four seats in the 2017 State Assembly elections and seven in the 2022 elections withdrew its support to the BJP-led Manipur Government on November 17, 2024.Joykumar said that the NPP's general body meeting discussed the activities undertaken by the party this year as well as its prospect for the 13th State Assembly election scheduled for 2027 .
He also said that the party discussed the dispute over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls between the NDA and INDIA Bloc.
Saying that there is a need for special revision of Manipur's electoral rolls too, the former Deputy Chief Minister maintained that there may surely be cases of dual and bogus voters in Manipur, as the State has been grappling with the issue of illegal immigrants.
Joykumar said that NPP is preparing to urge the Election Commission to carry out a similar drive (SIR) in the State before the 2027 Assembly election.
Saying that the recent meeting between Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) and different CSOs in Imphal was the first step to build confidence among the people, Joykumar lauded TIM for working to bring peace in the State.
He expressed desire for the political parties to hold similar meetings.
To a media query, Joykumar said that NPP has no objection to NSCN (IM) leader Th Muivah visiting his native village Somdal in Ukhrul.
Saying that Muivah was prevented from visiting his village by the then Government in 2010, he added that the present situation in Manipur is different from that time.
Joykumar said that the then Central Government tried to let Muivah visit his village unilaterally without consulting the State Government in 2010.Given that President's Rule is in place in Manipur and Muivah is in his later years, permitting him to visit his village on humanitarian grounds may not pose issues, he said.
