Imphal, January 15 2026:
A book titled "Demographic Imbalance in Manipur (Kangleipak): Its Impact and Solution" was officially released today at the Manipur Press Club.
Speaking as the special guest at the event, Prof N Joykumar, Vice Chancellor of Khongnangthaba University, emphasized that politicians must refrain from facilitating the entry of illegal immigrants for'the sake of vote bank politics, highlighting the long-term consequences of such actions on the demographic balance of the region.
He continued that a census should not be conducted in Manipur unless a National Register of Citizens (NRC) or a similar mechanism is implemented in the State to identify illegal immigrants.
Saying that disunity among the Meiteis persists in Manipur despite calls for unity by different groups, he emphasized that unity, however, cannot be achieved through mere words alone.
He also pointed out the high-handedness among intellectuals, stressing that people should listen to one another.
Joykumar claimed that the practice of adding nonlocals to the voter list, which was observed in Jiribam, has now been extended to some Constituencies in Imphal as well.
Retired IAS officer Mutum Yaiskul was the chief guest of the event.
He said that politicians, especially, must understand the impact of illegal immigration and work together to safeguard the future of Manipur.
Secretary general of the United Committee Manipur (UCM) Nahakpam Shanta stated that safeguarding Manipur means protecting the future not just of the Meiteis, but of all the communities that have coexisted for generations.
He claimed that illegal immigrants have been added to the voter lists in the Kuki Assembly Constituencies over the years, and now they are demanding a Separate Administration.
Conducting the census in 2026-2027 would severely impact the indigenous communities, he said and questioned how the census could be carried out when buffer zones are restricting people's movement.
He urged all indigenous people to unite and work together to safeguard Manipur.
The book compiled and edited by Maibam Bisheshwor, Kh Kumarchand and Sukham Bidyananda has different chapters such as "Demographic Imbalance in Manipur: Its Impact and Solution" by Longjam Munindro; Impracticability of 2027 Census in Manipur: A Critical Analysis" by Prof RK Narendra Singh; "Administrative Approaches to Inclusive Governance in Pluralistic Societies with Special Reference to Manipur" by RK Nimai; "Legal Status of People of Manipur after the Enforcement of the Constitution of India" by Irom Lalitkumar; "The Manipur Hill Areas (Acquisition of Chiefs' Rights Act 1967 vis a vis the Hereditary Chieftainship Prevalent among the Kuki Zo tribes" by Prof K Yugindro Singh; "Talking Points with Regards to Delimitation 2020" by Oinam Biren, "Growth of Population and its Impact in Delimitation of Assembly Constituency in Manipur" by Dr Moirangthem Manimohan Meitei; "Illegal Immigration, Demographic Imbalance in Manipur" by Ashem Muhindro and Moderator Remark by Naorem Joykumar.
