Imphal, July 25 2023:
Claiming that the core issue of the situation in Manipur is illegal immigrants, the Southern Tangkhul Naga Union (STNU) has urged the Centre and the State Government to show commitment and restore normalcy in Manipur at the earliest.
Addressing the media at its office at Tangkhul Avenue in Chingmeirong, STNU chairman Somi Angkang said the future of Manipur has been threatened greatly by narco-terrorists who intruded into the State and drug trafficking.
Manipur is in utter chaos now with the political and economic landscape of the State changing abruptly, he said and added that students not able to attend classes and agriculture activities put on halt will jeopardise the future of the State.
Can the people survive with just NFSA and MGNREGA subsidies, Somi asked and reiterated that the core issue of the situation is the illegal immigrants.
Maintaining that Tangkhul areas has four zones viz Eastern, Western, Southern and Northern Zones, Somi claimed that there is no question of foreigners intruding into these four zones illegally due to the pre-emptive measures they have taken up.
200 kilometres of these four zones lie along the Indo-Myanmar border, Somi said.
He then urged the Government to take the issue with utmost seriousness and resolve the crisis.
Saying that women activists blocking roads and dictating people will not bring any good, the STNU chairman asked the women to instead support the Government in resolving the crisis.
Expressing desire for the Government to open all schools and ensure the availability of all essentials, Somi said that there is nothing the Government can't do if they are committed.
