Imphal, April 29 2024:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has appealed to the authority concerned for video coverage of the polling process at all the six polling stations of Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency which would go to repoll tomorrow.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan here today, MPCC president K Meghachandra informed that they have written to the Election Commission of India as well as the CEO Manipur to ensure that the repoll is held in a peaceful manner and voters can cast their votes in favour of the candidate of their choice.
The Congress party has appealed to the authorities concerned to assign an Executive Magistrate at each polling station and deploy adequate number of Central paramilitary forces.
Meghachandra said that they called the Returning Officer through phone and appealed to do everything so that the repoll is conducted in a peaceful manner without any disturbances.
If an Executive Magistrate is assigned at each polling station, he/she can take up necessary action immediately if there is any disturbance or disruption, Meghachandra said.
The Congress party has received reports of unidentified armed persons moving and camping in the areas where repoll would be held tomorrow, he said.
Saying that repoll is being held at the six polling stations after armed persons disrupted the polling process and destroyed EVMs on April 26, the MPCC president urged the authorities concerned to ensure that no armed persons are allowed to disrupt the polling process tomorrow.
He said that the armed persons destroyed the EVMs after they came to know the majority of the voters had cast their votes in favour of the Congress candidate.
Expressing strong apprehension that the armed persons may threaten Congress supporters not to come out for voting or assault people who voted for the Congress candidate, the MPCC urged the ECI and the State's Home Department to prevent such unlawful activities.
On April 26, one key figure of BJP tried to drag a woman near a polling station and a video clip of the same scene has gone viral on social media, he said.
Notably, six polling stations viz; 44/20 Shangshak (A), 44/36 Ukhrul (A), 44/41 Ukhrul (D-1), 44/50 Ukhrul (F), 45/14 Chingai and 47/33 Oinam (A1) would be going to repoll on April 30 .
