Imphal, June 28 2025:
Most of the refugees from Myanmar who fled their country following the military coup in February 2021 and took refuge in Kamjong have reportedly returned to their native country.
According to reports received by The Sangai Express, over 7,000 Myanmar refugees took shelter in various villages of border district Kamjong such as Namli, Wangli, K Ashang Khullen, Choro, Pilong, Phaikok, Huimin Thana, Shangkalok etc due to crisis and instability in the neighbouring country.
It is reported that biometrics have been captured for over 6,000 refugees excluding children below 5 years.
According to a well-placed source, approximately 5,000 refugees have returned to Myanmar as the situation improves in the neighbouring country, with around 2,000 still seeking refuge in Kamjong.
The source mentioned that the remaining refugees often commute to their villages in Myanmar for agricultural work and other tasks during the day and return to their shelter in Kamjong in the evening.
The source further stated that identity cards were issued to Myanmar Nationals who were given refuge on humanitarian grounds to easily identify them.
The district administration is closely monitoring to identify those without Government-issued identity cards with the assistance of Assam Rifles, Manipur and other agencies, it said.
The source added that the refugees were provided food and essentials like utensils, buckets, tarpaulins, and tins through the district administration.
The sanctions for the refugees have stopped coming from the Government since the situation in Myanmar has improved and the refugees have started returning, the source added.
When asked if the refugees attempted to stay permanently in the State, the source replied that there have been no such cases and the Government is closely monitoring the refugees.
It may be mentioned that Phungyar AC MLA K Leishiyo had raised concerns over the number of refugees outnumbering local residents in shelter homes in Kamjong.
