Imphal, April 28 2026:
The State unit of BJP has reaffirmed that its stance on updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Manipur remains unchanged and the party will continue to work to ensure the exercise takes place.
Addressing the media at Thambal Shanglen today, BJP Manipur general secretary P Premananda Meitei stated that there was nothing inaccurate in the statement made by Chief Minister Y Khemchand regarding the sequence of the implementation of the census and NRC exercise.
However, he added that the Congress party has been attempting to misrepresent the Chief Minister and the BJP by implying that there is no connection between the NRC and the census.
Although the census and NRC are separate exercises, they are closely related as both pertain to the National population, he explained.
He also stated that there is nothing wrong in conducting the census first, removing the wrongful entries, and then updating the NRC and emphasized that neither the Chief Minister nor the BJP has any intention to mislead the public regarding the NRC.
Premananda further claimed that the Congress party does not want to update the NRC in Manipur, pointing out that the party never held any discussions on the NRC during their tenure.
In contrast, he said that the BJP, Manipur, passed a resolution supporting the NRC in Manipur during the State Assembly session in 2022, and reaffirmed the same resolution in 2024 .
Premananda also claimed that all Congress MLAs left the Assembly during the discussion to reaffirm the resolution to update the NRC.
He reiterated that BJP, Manipur, will take the necessary actions to ensure the NRC is updated in the context of Manipur and that illegal immigrants are deported, although the process may take some time.
The Congress party has been scheming to keep Manipur in a state of unrest, he charged.
The NRC must be updated for Manipur, considering the challenges facing the State and its position as a border State, the BJP leader said.
However, updating the NRC requires certain procedures to be followed, and as such, consultation with stakeholders is necessary, he explained.
Premananda stated that the Chief Minister's announcement to organise seminars on the NRC is for the welfare of the people and to ensure the success of the exercise.
Emphasising that updating the NRC cannot be rushed, as there are rules that must be followed, he also stated that the NRC update must be carried out in accordance with Centre's instruction.
Other BJP leaders also attended the press briefing.
