Khongjom War martyrs remembered, scribes feted

Martyrs of the Khongjom war were remembered at a function held at Khongjom Tengol Laikai Community Hall today.
During the commemoration event, organised by the Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War, 1891 Martyrs & Freedom Fighters, Kangleipak (Manipur) and FPMC Khongjom Bazar, rich floral tributes were paid to all known and unknown soldiers who were martyred in the Khongjom battle.
One social activist, and four journalists including Sangai Express' Manipuri Edition Editor Khongendra Khomdram were presented awards for their contributions in their respective fields.
Others who were awarded include People's Chronicle Editor Sagolsem Imo, Kangleipak Ki Meira Chief Editor Wangkhemcha Shamjai, Impact TV Chief Editor Yumnam Rupachandra and social activist Wungnaoshang (Ashang) Kasar.
The award ceremony and a Thang-Ta salute to the martyrs of the Khongjom war marked the event.
A minute of silence was also observed as a mark of respect for the soldiers who were martyred.
Justice Committee chairman Joychandra Konthoujam; Dr Rajivkumar Narengbam - a descendant of Narengbam Poila; Babina Group Chairman and Managing Director Dr Thangjam Dhabali attended the event as dignitaries.
Speaking at the commemoration event, Justice Committee chairman Joychandra Konthoujam stressed on the importance of instilling patriotism among younger generations.
The people of the State must trace the footsteps of "our brave forefathers" and draw inspiration from them, he said.
He called for conservation of all historical places including those associated with the Anglo-Manipuri War, and inclusion of more lessons on the history of Manipur in school syllabus.
Commenting on the present Manipur crisis, after violence broke out in May 2023, Joychandra said the Government of India must understand the plight of the indigenous people and act in a non-partisan manner.
He said the Government of India must cease policies that could hurt Manipur's integrity and its indigenous peoples.
